by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Appalachian State linebacker Brandon Grier was named the Southern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week Monday for his performance in the Mountaineers’ 34-17 victory over Chattanooga.

Grier returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown to cap 24-point Mountaineers fourth quarter. Appalachian State was tied 10-10 going into the final period.

Grier also recovered a fumble that set up a 14-yard touchdown pass from Jamal Jackson to Sean Price, which put the Mountaineers in front 27-10.

Grier also hurried Chattanooga quarterback Jacob Huesman into an interception by Jamal Lott. Grier finished with seven total tackles, including one that went for a loss.

Samford’s Fabian Truss, the league’s Offensive Player of the Week, ran 23 times for 180 yards and two touchdowns. Truss helped the Bulldogs rally past Western Carolina 25-21.

Samford defensive back James Bradberry was the Freshman of the Week after he picked off two passes against the Catamounts. Georgia Southern kicker Alex Hanks was the Special Teams Player of the Week after kicking two field goals, including the go-ahead kick, which gave the Eagles a 26-23 victory over Elon.
