Green Valley's boys and girls trip Bethel

BETHEL -- Green Valley used a big third quarter to pull away from Bethel and claim a 35-26 victory over the Beavers in middle school boys' basketball Thursday.

Green Valley outscored Bethel 18-2 in the third quarter after holding a 12-9 lead at halftime. The Eagles scored the first 14 points of the third quarter, including eight of them by Jonathan McClannon, before Bethel's Austin Phillips scored.

Green Valley led 30-11 at the end of the third quarter and took a 32-14 lead, the Eagles' largest of the game, on a Chase Scott basket. Bethel's Lawson Greene and Green Valley's Damon Moretz exchanged 3-point baskets before Bethel went on a 12-0 run to close out the game.

Green Valley took control of the game in the fist quarter by opening an 8-0 lead. The Eagles pushed their lead to 12-2 in the second quarter, but Bethel closed out the first half with a 7-0 run capped by a three-point play from A.J. Martinez that was followed by a Greene layup with 16 seconds left in the first half.

Chris Harrison led Green Valley in scoring with 12 points. McClannon added eight points and Moretz scored six points.

Hunter Greer scored five points, and both Scott and Dustin Canter each scored two. Jacob Ruppert, Will Hall, James Williams, Rod Harman, Ryan Harman, Dustin Grub, Eric Abbott, Tucker Church and Alex Weaver also played for Green Valley.

Bethel got 11 points from Greene and nine points from Martinez. Phillips scored four points and Alex Wilson scored two.

Ethan Scott, Maverick Moody and Lucas Green also played for Bethel.

In other boys' games, Hardin Park beat Valle Crucis 41-20, Parkway beat Cove Creek 37-12 and Mabel beat Blowing Rock 52-22.

Bethel plays at Parkway on Jan. 23, while Green Valley hosts Cove Creek on the same day. Mabel plays at Hardin Park and Valle Crucis plays at Blowing Rock on Jan. 23.



BETHEL -- Green Valley outscored Bethel 13-4 in the fourth quarter to pull away and take a 33-24 victory over Bethel in middle school girls' basketball Thursday.

Gracie Proffitt led the Eagles in scoring with 12 points. Chloe Walczak scored nine points and Taylor Walker scored eight.

Sierra Rusher and Abby Grubb also saw playing time for the Eagles.

Bethel got 16 points from Chelsea Adams, who made five shots from 2-point range and two from beyond the 3-point arc. Molly Roark, Sam Reese, Emma Ward and Megan Lambert all scored two points. Holly Norris also contributed to Bethel's cause, but did not crack the scoring column.

The teams battled to a 20-20 tie going into the fourth quarter when Green Valley broke out by scoring the first eight points of the quarter. After Walczak scored to give the Eagles a 28-20 lead, Lambert answered with a basket to close Green Valley's lead to 28-22.

Walczak stole the ball on Bethel's next possession and scored to push Green Valley's lead to 30-22. Green Valley got a basket from Walker and a foul shot from Proffitt to take a 33-22 lead before Roark scored a basket with 1:07 left to close the Eagles' lead to 33-24.

In other girls' games, Hardin Park beat Valle Crucis 39-11, Parkway beat Cove Creek 14-6 and Blowing Rock beat Mabel 21-9.

Bethel plays at Parkway on Jan. 23, while Green Valley hosts Cove Creek on the same day. Mabel plays at Hardin Park and Valle Crucis plays at Blowing Rock on Jan. 23.
