Green Hope, Broughton dominate state cross-country meet
by Staff Reports
It just wasn't meant to be this sesason for the Watauga High men's and
women's cross country teams. The WHS men, who raised some eyebrows
last fall with an impressive sixth-place finish, finished 11th on
Saturday at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class
4A state cross country championships.
Josh Anderson, who was 14th at
the state meet last season, finished 22nd in his final cross country
race as a Pioneer.
Anderson completed the race in 16:15.9; Bakri Abushouk won the
individual state championship as he burned up the course in 15:13.57.
He finished better than 18 seconds ahead of Mount Tabor's Dalton
Nickel. William Roberson of Broughton was the Caps' top runner,
placing third.
Peter Vandenburg, who was eighth last season and earned all-state
honors, was 109th in 17:32.14. Saturday's effort closed out a
disappointing season for Vandenburg, who has been slowed by a foot
injury this fall. He suffered the injury last spring during the indoor
track season.
Michael Holland was 37th (16:29.07), Bryan Brackney was 73rd
(16:52.53). A Wake County school earned the men's 4-A team title for a
sixth straight year, as Raleigh Broughton ran to the title with an
outstanding score of 41. The Caps had four runners in the top 12 and
won the championship for the second straight year.
In the women's race, WHS did not have a team in the field. The
Pioneers, who lost one of the top runners in the state when Darby
Middlebrook suffered a broken leg at the western regional last week,
finished sixth as a team. But the Pioneers did have two qualifiers in
the field.
Seniors Madison Harman and Doria Kosmala represented WHS Saturday
morning. Harman, a four-time state qualifier, was 23rd in 18:45.76;
Kosmala, who was making her first appearance at the state meet, was
27th in 18:56.72. Cary-Green Hope earned its fourth consecutive state
crown, tallying 83 points to hold off Charlotte Providence (101) and
Raleigh Broughton (128).
Junior Megan Sullivan of Broughton was the individual champion,
winning in a time of 17:48.03, just over three seconds ahead of
second-place Pegah Kamrani of East Chapel Hill.
