Gentry to be assistant with Clippers
by Staff Reports
ESPN.com is reporting that former Appalachian State guard Alvin Gentry will join the coaching staff of Doc Rivers with the Los Angeles Clippers.
Gentry, who was fired by the Phoenix Suns as that team's head coach this season, was also the head coach of the Clippers from 2001-03. ESPN.com said Gentry was hired by Rivers because of his knowledge of the franchise, and for being a good offensive coach.
Gentry coached the Suns to the 2010 Western Conference finals, but was released by the Suns after the team posted a 13-28 record after 41 games. The Suns were 54-28 in 2009-10.
Gentry also was a finalist for the available head coaching jobs in Charlotte and Memphis. ESPN.com also reported that he had a standing offer to be an assistant to Los Angeles Lakers head coach Mike D'Antoni. The two coached together at Phoenix from 2004-08.
Gentry played at Appalachian State from 1974-77.
