Furman pulls away from Appalachian for win

by Staff Reports

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Appalachian State lost its third straight game, a 68-53 setback at Furman, in front of 1,362 fans at Timmons Arena.

The visiting Mountaineers (8-19, 4-10 SoCon) shot a miserable 25 percent from the field in the first half, but found itself down just 25-21 by halftime. Appalachian State's shooting woes improved a bit in the second half, but not enough to keep the Mountaineers in the game.

App State made just 37.9 shots from the field in the second half and 31.1 percent for the game.

The Paladins were much more accurate, especially in the second half. Furman shot 50 percent for the game after making 60 percent from the field in the second half.

That allowed the Paladins to outscore the Mountaineers 43-32 in the second half.

Appalachian State got 16 points and 11 rebounds from Tommy Spagnolo, which is the Ashe County standout's seventh double-double of the season and his sixth in his last eight games.

Spagnolo also had two blocked shots and two steals in 36 minutes of playing time.

Tab Hamilton added 12 points and Jay Canty scored 10 points coming off the bench. Michael Obacha also pulled down 11 rebounds, but did not score any points.

Furman (9-18, 3-11) got 15 points each from Stephen Croone and Keith Belfield.

App State never led in the game. The Mountaineers fell behind 36-25 on a Belfield 3-point basket with 15:10 left in the second half.

App State closed to 41-35 on a Hamilton 3-pointer with 11:13 left in the game. Furman pushed its lead to 51-41 with 7:37 left, and never let the Mountaineers closer than nine points the rest of the game.
