The last time Watauga faced a Blair Hardin-coached team, the Pioneers lost 69-0. According to a news report, Watauga will get plenty of chances to face Hardin in the future.
According to a Charlotte Observer report, Hardin will be the new coach at Freedom High School. Hardin replaces Mike Helms, who was at Freedom for four seasons. Freedom was 12-3 last season.
That game Watauga played against Hardin was last season in the first round of the playoffs. Hardin’s Porter Ridge Pirates beat the overmatched Pioneers.
Porter Ridge reached the state 4-A championship game, but lost in the final. His teams went 50-18 over his five years at Porter Ridge.
Freedom was classified as a 3-A school for the 2013 season. The Patriots were moved back into the Northwestern Conference with Watauga, Fred T. Foard, Hibriten, Hickory, Patton, St. Stephens and South Caldwell.
Porter Ridge, which played in a Southern Carolina 3-A/4-A Conference last season, was moved to a conference that includes Butler, East Mecklenburg, Garinger, Independence, Myers Park and Rocky River. That league also begins next season.
