Fred T. Foard wins 3-A wrestling title

NEWTON — Fred T. Foard’s wrestling team won the state 3-A dual championship with a 41-27 victory over visiting Eden Morehead Saturday.
Seven of Foard’s eight victories were either by pinfall or major decision. Foard (39-2) took a 31-9 lead after nine matches and never looked back. Nick Rotenberry’s 13-5 victory at 220 pounds gave the Tigers a 35-9 lead that was insurmountable.
Foard’s Ben Hughes, who was named the match’s Most Valuable Wrestler, pinned Will Dabs at 138 pounds to give the Tigers a 10-3 lead. Foard also got pinfalls from Trevor Cook at 160 pounds, Caleb Bumgarner’s pin at 170 pounds and from Cameron Wilforng at 195 pounds.
Dylan Curtis gave the Tigers their final victory, a pin of Joe Barns at 285 pounds.
West Wilkes 41, North Rowan 25
MILLERS CREEK — West Wilkes won its fourth straight 1-A dual wrestling championship with a 41-25 victory over visiting North Rowan Saturday.
West Wilkes was led by Eithen Sheets (285 pounds) and Jorge Lima (152 pounds), who were named co-Most Valuable Wrestlers of the match. West Wilkes, which was in the finals for the fifth straight year, finished with a 17-1 record. North Rowan slipped to 27-3.
