Foard eliminates Watauga boys

HICKORY — Watauga’s boys’ basketball team bowed out of the Northwestern Conference Tournament with a 61-43 loss to No. 1 seeded Fred T. Foard Tuesday at Dave Craft Gym at Hickory High School.
Watauga (13-10), the No. 4 seed in the NWC Tournament is still the No. 1 seed of 4A teams in the NWC when it comes to the state 4A tournament. The Pioneers host a first-round game on Feb. 25 against an opponent that has not been determined.
Foard (21-5) takes on No. 2 seeded Hickory in the finals of the tournament, which is Friday at 8 p.m., also at Craft Gym.
Foard built a 26-11 lead with 2:01 left in the second quarter against Watauga, which scored just three points in the first six minutes of the period. The Pioneers crept back into the game behind the scoring of Collin Augustine and DeWayne Mackey, Watauga scored the final nine points of the second quarter and trailed 26-20 by halftime.
Foard took control of the game in the third quarter with a 9-2 run early in the period. The Tigers took a 39-29 lead into the fourth quarter, and outscored the Pioneers 22-14 in the fourth.
Foard held a 59-37 lead with 1:45 left, the Tigers’ largest in the game.
Cameron Baker led Watauga in scoring with 13 points. Augustine added eight points and Mackey had seven.
Spencer Matthews scored 16 points for the Tigers, while Jordan Turner scored 11. Joe Isenhour added 10.
