Fast start carries Watauga girls past Wilkes Central

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Watauga’s girls’ basketball team took an early lead and never looked back in its 46-22 victory over Wilkes Central at Lentz-Eggers Gym Tuesday.

The Pioneers got 14 points from post player Kaelin McNeill, 10 of them in the first half. Wilkes Central left McNeill open on several occasions after defending Watauga’s perimeter. Savanna Wood added eight points, and Tori Derrick, Claire Harris and Danielle Welsh all finished six points.

Watauga got off to a good start by taking an 8-2 lead, but it was outscoring the Eagles 16-5 in the second quarter that put the Pioneers in front 24-7 by halftime. Watauga could have added to its lead, but turned the ball over three times and did not score in the final 2:29 of the half.

Wilkes Central struggled with its offense the entire first half. The Eagles scored just one basket from the field in the second quarter when Laken Blackburn hit a layup with two seconds left in the first half.

Wilkes Central ended up making 2-of-8 from the foul line and 1-of-12 from the field in the second quarter. It wasn’t much better in the third quarter when the Eagles were outscored 11-3 in the third quarter.

Watauga took a 35-10 lead into the fourth quarter.

Blackburn led the Eagles in scoring with 11 points.
