Fancher reunites with Peterson

Former Appalachian State men's basketball coach Houston Fancher was hired to be an assistant at UNC Wilmington Tuesday.
Fancher, who spent nine years as Appalachian State's head coach from 2000-09, spent the last four seasons as an assistant at Tennessee. Fancher was an assistant for Buzz Peterson, the current head coach at UNC Wilmington, at Appalachian State before Peterson left ASU for Tulsa.
Fancher took over the position when Peterson left.
He joins former UNC Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach, who left his post at UNCA this spring to join Peterson's staff.
RUFFIN INKS WITH ASU
SALISBURY -- Justin Rufin, a running back from Salisbury High School, signed a letter of intent to be a preferred walk-on at Appalachian State, according to the Salisbury Post.
Ruffin, who stands 5-foot-10, gained 1,724 yards and scored 33 touchdowns on just 149 carries. That adds up to an 11.6 yards per carry.
He led the Hornets to an 11-3 record and a berth in the Western 2-AA final. Ruffin's coach, Joe Pinyan, told the Post that he feels his situation is similar to that of former ASU running back Kevin Richardson, who was just 5-9, but walked on to the ASU program and eventually became the Mountaineers' all-time rusher.
"Justin fits that same mold," Pinyan said.
