Elon takes baseball series from App State

ELON -- The Appalachian State baseball team dropped its second Southern Conference series of the season, losing 4-2 in the third game at Latham Park on Sunday.
Appalachian State (14-23, 8-6 SoCon) got two hits from Tyler Stroup, who singled and scored on a Michael Pierson RBI single in the first inning, and belted a solo home run in the sixth.
Elon (25-15, 11-7 SoCon) tied the game 1-1 on an RBI double by Tyler McVicar in the first, and took a 3-1 lead on RBI singles by Quinn Bower and Blaine Bower in the fifth inning.
After Stroup's home run, Elon got an RBI double by Ryan Cooper in the bottom of the sixth inning. Stroup and Pierson both had two hits for the Mountaineers, representing Appalachian's only four hits.
Appalachian made things interesting in the ninth inning. With two outs, Tyler Zupcic and Preston Troutman both walked to put the tying runs on base, but Bradley Morton flied out to centerfield to end the game.
Appalachian State starter Jeffrey Springs was charged with the loss. He gave up four runs on nine hits and struck out six in six innings.
Robert Whaley replaced him in the seventh inning and gave up only one hit, facing seven batters.
Jake Stalzer picked up the win for the Phoenix. He gave up two runs on four hits in eight innings. He also had four strikeouts.
Ryan Pennell got the save for Elon pitching the ninth inning. Casey Jones led the Phoenix with two hits, a run and a walk. Quinn Bower had one hit, one run and one RBI on the day.
Appalachian State plays at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Virginia Tech.
