Elon rallies past Appalachian State

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

ELON -- Just about every basketball team looks back on a season and points to a game that they should have won, but didn't.

Appalachian State had one of those games at Alumni Gym Thursday night against Elon. The Mountaineers held a lead late in the game, but two ASU turnovers allowed the Phoenix to escape with a 61-58 victory in front of 1,533 fans.

Appalachian State (11-14, 7-7) was holding out hopes for catching Elon (17-8, 10-3) and winning the Southern Conference North Division. The Mountaineers needed a win over the Phoenix, and a little luck, to win the division and grab a bye in the Southern Conference Tournament.

With four games to go for the Mountaineers, it will take considerable fortune for that to happen. The Mountaineers play at UNC Greensboro on Sunday, and then host their final three games of the season.

Appalachian State led 54-47 with 4:23 left to play but Elon went on a 6-0 run to pull to 54-53 with just two minutes left in the game. The Mountaineers led 58-55 on two Jamaal Trice foul shots, but the Phoenix got a basket from Ryley Beaumont, and then a turnover that Sebastian Koch converted into a pair of foul shots that gave the Phoenix a 59-58 lead with 4.5 seconds left.

Elon added two more free throws to ice the game.

Beaumont led the Phoenix with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Jack Isenbarger added 16 points and Koch scored 11.

Appalachian State got 17 points and 12 rebounds from Jay Canty and 12 points from Nathan Healy. The Mountaineers shot just 39.2 percent from the field, which was better than the 37.9 percent the Phoenix shot. ASU also made just 3-of-16 shots from 3-point range.
