Elon cruises past ASU women 75-58

ELON — Appalachian State’s women’s basketball team fell behind by 11 points in the second half and could not catch up in a 75-58 loss to the Phoenix Monday night in front of 518 fans at Alumni Gym.

The Mountaineers (18-7, 12-5 Southern Conference), who trailed 34-28 at halftime, rallied to pull to 40-39 with 14:51 left in the game. After the teams traded points, the Phoenix answered with a 12-0 run that put Elon in front 54-43.

Elon (15-12, 12-6) eventually built its lead to 21 points late in the game.

Appalachian State got 25 points from Maryah Sydnor, who made 10-of-15 shots from the field. Sydnor also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Courtney Freeman added 13 points and Raven Gary scored eight. Anna Freeman struggled from the field, making just 1-of-8 from the field. She finished with three points and pulled down five rebounds.

Ali Ford led four Phoenix players in scoring with 19 points. Kelsey Evans added 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Evans also had eight points.

Elon short 50.8 percent from the field, including 57.1 percent in the second half. Elon also made 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from 3-point range, including 5-of-9 in the first half.

Elon helped itself by dishing out 23 assists, including eight from Kelsey Harris.

Appalachian State made 40.7 percent from the field.

Appalachian State plays at UNC Greensboro Wednesday night in a game that was postponed from Saturday because several UNCG players were unable to play because of illness. The Mountaineers close out the regular season with home games against Chattanooga on Saturday and on March 4 against Samford.
