Davidson's women's team trips ASU

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

Davidson's women's basketball team kept its Southern Conference regular season championship hopes alive.

Appalachian State is still in the race, but made things difficult for itself against Davidson. The Mountaineers lost 56-49 to the visiting Wildcats at the Holmes Center Saturday, which put ASU at 14-6 overall, but more importantly 8-4 in the SoCon.

The loss was the Mountaineers' second to the Wildcats. Appalachian State hosts Furman in the first half of a doubleheader with the men's team at 5:30 p.m. Monday looking to win the second game of a three-game homestand. Wofford visits the Holmes Center on Saturday.

Davidson improved to 14-8 overall, 11-1 in the SoCon. The Wildcats are battling Chattanooga for the top spot in the SoCon.

Though Appalachian State held Davidson to just a foul shot during a key stretch of the second half, the Mountaineers could never take the lead away from the Wildcats. Appalachian State trailed 50-41, but went on a n 8-1 run to pull to within 51-49 with 1:33 left in the game,

That was when the Mountaineers' stopped scoring. Three ASU turnovers allowed the Wildcats to score their final six points from the foul line to ice the victory.

Maryah Sydnor led the Mountaineers in scoring with 18 points after making 8-of-9 from the foul line. Anna Freeman added 15 points, but made just 3-of-12 shots from the 3-point line. Katie Mallow scored eight more points for the Mountaineers, and Kelsey Sharkey grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

Sophia Aleksandravicius led the Wildcats with 14 points. Shneeka Center also had 14 points off the bench for Davidson.

Neither team shot very well for much of the game. Davidson took a 25-20 halftime lead after making just 39.3 percent from the field.

Appalachian State made just 8-of-28 from the field in the first half (28.6 percent). That improved just slightly in the second half when the Mountaineers made 9-of-27 (33.3 percent) from the field.
