Crothers named to Flagler Hall of Fame

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Appalachian State women's tennis head coach Colin Crothers will be inducted into the Flagler College Athletics Hall of Fame.

 

The induction will take place on May 17th as part of Flagler's 11th annual Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner. Crothers will be joined in this year's class by his former collegiate coach, Walter Shinn, who is in his 35th season as the head tennis coach for the Saints.

 

"I feel very honored and humbled to be selected to the Flagler College Athletics Hall of Fame," Crothers said.  "I have always tried to stress to my student-athletes that you have a limited time to compete in college and to always give it your best."

 

Crothers, who just finished his 16th season with the Mountaineers, was a three-time NAIA all-American for the Saints before graduating with a degree in business administration.

 

He earned all-America honors as a singles player in 1982 and 1983. when he reached the national quarterfinals Crothers was a doubles all-American in 1984 when he teamed with Peter Ryan to reach the national championship match.

 

In addition to his on-court accolades, Crothers was also named as an Academic all-American in 1983.

 

Before coming to Appalachian, Crothers was a teaching professional at top clubs in Atlanta and Pittsburgh before spending time at Boone's own Yonahlossee Racquet Club. He is the winningest head coach in women's tennis history with 149 wins, and led the Mountaineers to their first-ever national ranking of No. 65 in 2013 No. 65.

 

During his time in Boone, Crothers has led his team to the Southern Conference semifinals three times and coached nine players to all-SoCon honors including two Freshman of the Year in Clare Cox and Anja Gugger. Crothers has also seen his squads earn 24 academic all-SoCon honors.
