The High Country Classic cross-country event brought six new programs to Boone. The home team still proved up to the added competition.
Watauga’s Darby Middlebrook won the girls’ event, and Josh Anderson was second in the boys’ race. Both race were run on a soggy track. The girls’ race was started in a downpour.
Middlebrook finished well in front of the rest of the pack with a time of 18:38. She said the course was wet, but it was not difficult to run through.
“It was really exciting actually,” Middlebrook said. “At first it was like, ‘Oh man, this is fun.’ After a while, I’m just going to get soaked. It was pretty fun.”
Middlebrook also beat Dunwoody’s Alex Cameron, who is the Georgia 5-A state champion in the 1,600-meter run. Cameron finished with a time of 19:33 on the 5K course.
Kathleen Mansure was fourth with a time of 20:06 and Lynde Wangler was eighth with a time of 20:59. Riley Dobbins was 12th with a time of 21:22.
Watauga’s girls also won the team competition with 36 points. Dunwoody was second with 44.
Anderson finished second in the boys’ race with a time of 16:49. Peter Vandenberg was fifth with a 17:10 and Michael Holland was seventh with a 17:18. Bryan Brackney was eighth with a 17:18.
