by Staff Reports

CHARLOTTE — Appalachian State got 20 points from Anna Freeman, but the Mountaineers could not overcome a late Charlotte rally and fell 79-61 in the first round of the WNIT Thursday in front of 637 fans at Halton Arena.

Appalachian State (20-11) trailed 49-46 with 9:53 left in the game, but Charlotte pulled away with a 15-6 run that gave them a 64-52 lead with 5:29 left. Charlotte (25-5) eventually extended its lead to 79-59 with 1:13 left in the game.

Freeman, playing in her final game as a Mountaineer, made 6-of-16 shots from the field and all six of her free throws before fouling out. She also dished out two assists, grabbed two rebounds and had four steals in 27 minutes on the court.

Bria Huffman added 11 points and three rebounds off the bench for the Mountaineers, who were outrebounded 45-32 by the 49ers. Charlotte also outscored Appalachian State 48-20 in the paint, and scored 28 points off 20 Appalachian State turnovers.

Appalachian State’s three other graduating seniors — Courtney Freeman, Kelsey Sharkey and Raven Gary — all struggled offensively. The three combined to score eight points and shot, as a trio, 3-for-12 from the field.

The rest of the crew wasn’t much better. Appalachian State shot just 39.0 percent from the field, compared to Charlotte shooting 47.7 from the floor. Charlotte shot 52.9 percent from the field in the first half with the 49ers took a 38-33 lead.

Charlotte got 20 points and 11 rebounds from Jennifer Hailey. Amanda Dowe added 19 points and pulled down 16 boards. Ayanna Holmes added 10 points, and Ny Hammonds dished out 10 of Charlotte’s 22 assists.
