Browns release Edwards
by Staff Reports
Former Appalachian State quarterback Armanti Edwards was released by the
Cleveland Browns last week and this week he was among four who tried out for the Detroit Lions.
Edwards, who led App State to a pair of national Football Championship Subdivision championships, was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the third round of the 2010 draft. He was released by the Panthers earlier this season after finishing his career at Carolina with five receptions. Edwards was picked up by the Browns a few weeks later, but injured his ankle and was put on injured reserve.
Edwards is a two-time Walter Payton Award winner, which is given to the top football player in the FCS by The Sports Network. He converted to receiver with the Panthers, but did not catch a pass until his third season with the team.
Edwards also returned punts and kickoffs with the Panthers. He was brought in by the Browns to do the same.
