Bethel's Martinez scores 33 points in victory

BLOWING ROCK -- Blowing Rock boys' basketball team had no answer for Bethel's A.J. Martinez.
Martinez lit up Blowing Rock for 33 points in Bethel's 51-29 road victory Monday night in Blowing Rock's gym. Martinez scored most of his points from the paint, including 14 of them on seven stickbacks.
Martinez scored on 16 baskets and made 1-of-6 from the foul line.
His points total was four more than the entire Rockets roster. Justin Howell scored seven points and Graham Helton scored six for Blowing Rock. Isaac Soucek added five.
Martinez got help from teammate Lawson Greene, who scored eight points.
Martinez scored eight of the Beavers' 14 points in the first quarter to lead them to a 14-7 lead. Bethel took a 24-12 lead in the second quarter, but got back-to-back baskets from Howell to close to 24-18 by halftime.
Bethel thought it had put the game out of reach in the third quarter by scoring the first nine points of the third quarter to take a 33-18 lead. Blowing Rock finished the quarter with a 7-0 run and trailed 33-23 going into the fourth quarter.
Bethel led 41-28 and closed out the final quarter with a 10-0 run.
Blowing Rock girls 25, Bethel 14
BLOWING ROCK -- Blowing Rock's girls' basketball team took a big first-half lead and cruised to a 25-14 victory over visiting Bethel Monday.
Blowing Rock took an 8-2 lead by the end of the first quarter after the Rockets' Mackenzie Thompson scored the first three baskets of the game. The Rockets outscored Bethel 7-2 in the second quarter and took a commanding 15-4 halftime lead.
Both teams scored 10 points in the second half.
Thompson led all scorers with 10 points on five field goals. Grace Miller scored six points and Sophie Reese and Parris Bolick each scored four points for the Rockets. Hannah Marlett added a point for Blowing Rock.
Emma Ward, Molly Roark and Holly Norris each scored four points for Bethel. Megan Lambert scored two.
