Avery slips past Mitchell

NEWLAND — Avery avoided the Western Highlands Conference cellar by beating Mitchell 13-6 Friday night at MacDonald Stadium.
Avery finished with a 3-8 overall record, 1-6 in the WHC. Two of the Vikings’ victories this season were against Mitchell, which finished 1-10 overall, 0-7 in the conference.
Avery preserved a 7-6 lead when Daniel Childres returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown with no time left on the clock. The Vikings intercepted two Mitchell passes and recovered a fumble.
Avery also scored in the second quarter when Payton Lowery capped an 83-yard, 14-play drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. Avery finished with 165 yards rushing and 182 in total offense.
Luke Childress gained 59 yards on 17 carries. Childres added 43 yards on just six carries.
Avery also lost three fumbles.
Mitchell got on the scoreboard by driving 99 yards in nine plays. Turner Pitman scored on a 3-yard touchdown run, but Pitman was stopped on Mitchell’s two-point conversion attempt.
Mitchell finished with 179 yards in total offense, 155 of them on the ground. Dalton Beaver led Mitchell with 105 yards on 19 carries.
Both teams struggled passing the ball. Mitchell completed 3-of-11 passes for 24 yards, while Avery completed 1-of-4 passes for 17 yards.
