Avery scores twice in fourth quarter to win

NEWLAND -- Avery scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to beat Bessemer City 36-21 in the first round of the state 1-AA football playoffs Friday night at MacDonald Stadium.

The Vikings (5-7) took a 23-21 lead into the fourth quarter, but got a 44-yard touchdown run from quarterback Tre Jackson, and a 23-yard Jackson touchdown pass to Heath Austin -- all within a span of 56 seconds.

Jackson's touchdown run capped an 80-yard, eight play drive, which put the Vikings in front 29-21. Bessemer City (6-6) fumbled at its 12-yard line on the first play of its ensuing drive.

After a holding penalty pushed the Vikings back to their 23-yard line, Jackson found Austin for a touchdown. Avery's Wade Smith intercepted a pass on Bessemer City's next play, and Avery was able to run out the clock to secure the win.

Jackson found different ways to put points on the scoreboard. His 10-yard touchdown pass to Stetson Stafford gave the Vikings a 7-0 lead.

Bessemer City, who finished second in the Southern Piedmont 1-A Conference, struck back with an 8-yard touchdown run by Jha'Qui Adams 8-yard run and a Cedric Mackey 2-yard run, but Jackson capped a 12-play, 66-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run, which brought the Vikings to within 14-13.

Jackson the hit a 22-yard field goal with seven seconds left in the second quarter to put the Vikings in front 16-14 at halftime.

Jackson finished with 91 yards rushing on 19 carries. He also completed 3-for-5 passes for 48 yards and two touchdowns.

Austin Phillips led the Vikings in rushing with 110 yards on 19 carries. The Vikings rushed for 268 yards on 53 carries.

Josh Davis led Bessemer City in rushing with 96 yards on just seven carries. Adams added 70 yards on eight carries.
