Avery belts West Wilkes

NEWLAND - Avery made it two wins in a row in impressive fashion by overwhelming West Wilkes 48-8 in prep football Friday night at MacDonald Stadium.
Avery (2-0) tuned up for its border showdown against arch-rival Watauga by scoring 28 points in the first quarter and by holding a 37-0 lead by halftime. Colton Blackburn scored on touchdown runs of 17 and 10 yards in the first quarter, and Alex Villaneuva connected on touchdown passes to Taylor Potter (30 yards) and Kody Hughes (28 yards) to give the Vikings a 28-0 lead.
Potter added a 13-yard touchdown run and Dustin Clark hit a 29-yard field goal to give the Vikings their 37-0 halftime lead. Clark also hit a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, and Villanueva found Remington Austin for a 4-yard TD pass, also in the fourth quarter.
The Vikings outgained West Wilkes 352-152. Blackburn led the Vikings' rushing attack with 58 yards on five carries.
Villanueva completed 12-of-23 passes for 233 yards.
Tyler Woods led West Wilkes (0-1) with 122 yards rushing on 28 carries. He also scored the Blackhawks' lone touchdown, that coming in the third quarter on a 4-yard run. West Wilkes quarterback Seth Absher completed 5-of-12 passes for 40 yards and tossed three interceptions. West Wilkes also lost four fumbles to the Vikings' defense, and Avery scored a safety in the third quarter.
