Ashe boys' basketball team downs East Wilkes

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

RHONDA -- Ashe County boys' basketball team made nine 3-pointers in its 65-51 victory over host East Wilkes Friday night.

East Wilkes extended its winless streak to 14 games this season. The Cardinals (0-14, 0-5 Mountain Valley Conference) were coming off a tough 66-61 loss to Starmount on Tuesday.

Alex Spencer did the most damage from 3-point range by making four of them. He finished with 16 points, but teammate Devan Sheets led the Huskies with 17 points after making three 3-point goals.

Conner Bowers added a 3-point shot and finished with seven points. Colin Winebarger added a 3-point basket and finished with four points.

Bradley Lucas scored 12 points after making five shots from the field. Ashe coach Scott Grubb said the Huskies went to a different offense and tried to get the ball inside to open up their outside shooting.

"It's the best we've shot it," Ashe coach Scott Grubb said. "That's the kind of shooting I was expecting at the start of the year. That's what we demonstrated over the summer. That's what we've demonstrated during skill development sessions, so I've been waiting for us to start hitting a few. Sheets and Spencer did a great job tonight and in critical times, too."

Ashe County (5-9, 3-1) kept the Cards at a safe distance for most of the game after taking a 40-35 into the fourth quarter. Ashe went on a 17-8 run and took a 57-44 lead capped by back-to-back 3-point baskets from Alex Spencer.

Ashe County did not score from the field the rest of the game, a time span that stretched 2:41. Ashe made 8-of-12 foul shots during that time, and finished the fourth quarter by scoring 25 points in the period.

East Wilkes, after getting a 3-point basket from Zach Nixon, did not score at all in the final 59 seconds of the game.

"A matchup zone really helped us in the fourth quarter," Grubb said. "We went to that because we were having trouble (stopping) dribble drive. East Wilkes was shredding us and the matchup slowed them down a little big and pause and look and see what was going on a bit."

Will Jolly led East Wilkes in scoring with 18 points. Andrew Mance added eight points and Seth Longbottom added seven.

The victory helped sooth the wound of losing 60-59 in double overtime to North Wilkes on Wednesday.

Sheets finished with 13 points, while Spencer and Lucas each scored 12. Cullen Ashley added 11 points.

Ashe plays a makeup game at Starmount on Wednesday.
