Ashe County girls' team beats Watauga

by Steve Behr Sports Editor

WEST JEFFERSON -- Ashe County's girls' basketball team, in past games this season, has struggled to score points.
Head coach Laura Foster was looking for a couple of players to pick up the scoring slack that was missing from those early games.
Foster found two scorers to propel the Huskies to a 43-28 victory over visiting Watauga Friday night at Ashe's gym.
Paige Spell scored 18 points and Morgan Hudler added 13 points for the Huskies. Hudler scored 16 points in a 33-29 victory over Watauga on Dec. 6 at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
Watauga's offense continued to struggle without leading scorer Savanna Wood, who averages 16 points per game. Wood, who has missed three games because of a sprained ankle, did not play Friday night for the Pioneers.
Ryan Loflin led the Pioneers with eight points. Madi Brown added five points and Tori Derrick scored four.
Ashe took advantage of its scoring from the free throw line. The Huskies made 16-of-27 foul shots, while Watauga settled for making 6-of-10.
Ashe (3-4) took control of the game in the second quarter after Watauga (0-7) built a 17-11 lead. Ashe closed out the final 4:21 of the quarter by outscoring the Pioneers 12-0 to take a 23-17 into halftime. Watauga went 0-for-8 from the field and missed two foul shots during the Huskies' run.
Ashe took a 34-23 lead in the third quarter before leading 34-26 going into the fourth quarter. Watauga scored just two points in the fourth quarter, and Ashe made 7-of-10 foul shots in the fourth quarter to ice the victory.
Watauga starts Northwestern Conference play Tuesday at home against St. Stephens. The Pioneers also host Wilkes Central on Wednesday.
Ashe hosts Mount Airy on Monday and play at Avery on Tuesday.
