Ascent bike race in Blowing Rock

The Ascent Bike and Run Hill Climbs will be run at the Blue Ridge Mountain Club in Blowing Rock Sunday, Aug. 12. The event is sponsored by Pirate Race Productions and Magic Cycles.
The race is 9.25 miles long with an ascent of 3,200 feet. The average grade is 5.0 percent with a maximum pitch of 17.5 percent. The Ascent course received a Category 1 rating from Strava.com.
The race is the second stop in the Capo Cycling Apparel King of Pain Series. The Three Peaks USA Ultra Cross at the Banner Elk Winery is Sept. 23.
Brian Sheedy holds the Ascent men’s course record with a time of 45 minutes, seven seconds. Alison Arensman holds the women’s record with a time of 1:01.41.
There will also be a road running race that begins at the mid-point of the Ascent bike race. The Ascent Run is the second race in the High Country Summit Series, which includes the Bear 5-Mile Run held in July, and The Knob Hill climb in Boone on Oct. 5.
Registration for the both the run and the bike race is $30 until 3 p.m. Aug. 8. Registration on race day is an extra $5. Registration is available on Active.com.
