Appalachian State women outlast Wofford

by Staff Reports

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Wofford’s women’s basketball team nearly pulled off the upset of the season Monday, but Appalachian State managed to claim a 68-65 victory that needed two overtimes to secure.

Appalachian State turned the ball over 35 times and shook off poor shooting in the overtime periods to beat Wofford. The Mountaineers made just 2-of-7 shots in the overtime periods, though Wofford made just 3-of-11 shots during the same stretch.

Maryah Sydnor led all scorers with 23 points. She and teammate Anna Freeman each pulled down 14 of Appalachian State’s 49 rebounds.

Katie Mallow added 14 points and Courtney Freeman scored 12.

Anna Freeman scored nine points after making just 2-of-12 shots from the field. She also dished out six assists and had four steals in 50 minutes of playing time.

Morgan Wrightson scored 21 points to lead Wofford. Daniella Motley scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Appalachian State seemed to have victory in hand when Sydnor hit a layup with six seconds left in the first overtime to give the Mountaineers a 58-56 lead.

Wofford countered with a Wrightson jump shot with a second left to tie the game 58-58.  The Mountaineers retook the lead 66-62 in the second overtime, but a Jordan Frazier drained a 3-point basket with seven seconds left to bring the Terriers to within one.

Anna Freeman made two final foul shots to close out the win.

Appalachian State plays at College of Charleston on Friday and at home against UNC Greensboro on Sunday.
