App State's men's tennis team beats Bobcats

by Staff Reports

Appalachian State's men's tennis team was dominant its 7-0 win in its home-opening matchup against Lees-McRae Sunday at Deer Valley Racquet Club.

The Mountaineers (1-1) swept their matches in doubles action to secure an early 1-0 lead against the Bobcats (0-2).

Once again, Appalachian's top duo of Zach Bost and Sebastian King finished strong, winning 8-4 at the No. 1 spot. Robert Jenkins and Daniel Hoang won the No. 2 doubles match 8-2, while the No. 3 team of Steve Lake and Jack Maddocks won their match 8-3.

In singles play, the Mountaineers started strong with King winning the No. 1 spot against Lees-McRae's Taduez Poplawski 6-1, 6-2. No. 2 seeded Hoang was just as successful by beating the Bobcats' Joao Araujo 6-2, 6-2.

The No. 3 and No. 4 spots were the most decisive singles victories of the day for Appalachian. Bost won 6-0, 6-1 over Lees-McRae's Carlos Pinel and Maddocks swept Hang Lak Choi 6-0, 6-0.

Lees-McRae was close to a win in the No. 5 singles match but the Mountaineers' Lake successfully held off Garrett Lakey to win the match 6-4, 6-4. The Bobcats' Scott Alford tried to comeback against Jenkins in the second set, but fell also short of the win, losing the match 6-1, 6-3.

Appalachian State stays home for one more match on Feb. 16 against UNC Asheville before their road trip of 12-straight away from Boone. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Deer Valley Racquet Club.
