Maryah Sydnor scored a game-high 24 points as Appalachian State's women's basketball topped USC-Aiken 73-55 in its lone exhibition contest of the season Saturday at the Holmes Center.
The Mountaineers saw three players score in double figures as Bria Huffman scored 14 points and Katie Mallow added 11.
After falling behind by as many as eight points (28-20) with just over six minutes to play in the first half, the Mountaineers closed out the first period on a 14-4 run to take a 34-32 lead into the locker room.
Appalachian never trailed again. The Mountaineers eventually built a double-digit lead (55-43) when Sydnor drilled a 3-pointer from six feet beyond the arc as time ran out on the shot clock.
The Pacers were able to cut the lead to eight points (55-47) with a quick 4-0 run, but the Mountaineers staved off the potential comeback and took total control, pushing the lead back to double digits (57-47) when LaShawna Gatewood made a pair of free throws on the next possession.
The Mountaineers would outscore USC-Aiken 16-8 the rest of the game.
The Mountaineers have no other exhibition games before their regular season opener Friday at Vanderbilt.
