by Staff Reports

Led by 29 points from Maryah Sydnor, Appalachian State's women's basketball team routed Lees-McRae 86-57 for their first win of the season on Friday evening at the Holmes Center.

Sydnor poured in 29 points on 13-of-20 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 mark from 3-point range. Her points total was one shy of a career high, while the three three-pointers matched a personal best.

Sydnor also set a new career high with five assists. Appalachian State dished out 25 assists for 35 made baskets.

Lees-McRae (1-2) proved to be a worthy adversary in the early going as it jumped out to a 4-0 lead and led 13-11 midway through the first half. However, sparked by 13 points from Sydnor, Appalachian State (1-2) went on a 26-12 run over the final 9:38 of the opening period and took a comfortable 37-25 lead into halftime.

The advantage never shrunk below 12 in the second half.

Katie Mallow and KeKe Cooper each added 11 points. Cooper also pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds and blocked five shots.

Mallow also handed out five assists. Freshman Amber Doniere grabbed nine rebounds and Bria Huffman added seven boards.

Appalachian shot 53 percent (35-of-66), including 45.5 percent from 3-point land (5-of-11). The Mountaineers out-rebounded the Bobcats, 51-31, and held a 25-9 advantage in assists.

Layana De Souza led Lees-McRae with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Alyssa Munson scored 14 points and Lauren Lewis chipped in 10.
