App State softball team falls 7-6

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Appalachian State softball opened its
2014 season Thursday evening with a 7-6 loss in eight innings to San Diego State in the Kajikawa
The Mountaineers also played Western Michigan, but weather delays forced a postponement of the game
Appalachian State took a three-run into the seventh inning, but could not hold the lead. The Mountaineers outhit San Diego State 12-9, but an unearned run scored in the eighth inning made the difference for the Aztecs
Appalachian State scored its first run in the second inning on an RBI single by Sarah Warnock, who drove in Cara Parker to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.
San Diego State tied the game 1-1, but the Mountaineers took a 4-1 lead on a three-run home run hit by Ashley Seering in the fourth inning. The Mountaineers took a 5-2 lead in the fifth inning on back-to-back singles from Lindsay Loudermilk and Seering, and a 6-3 lead on an RBI single by Monica Downey in the sixth.
Seering went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Dani Heichen went 3-for-4 from the plate for the Mountaineers.
San Diego State tied the game 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning, and scored the winning run, which was unearned, in the eighth on a Hayley Miles RBI single.
Alissa Schoelkopf pitched the first seven innings for the Mountaineers. She allowed six runs, eight hits and struck out four.
Shivaun Landeros took the loss on the mound for the Mountaineers after yielding a walk and a hit.
