CULLOWHEE -- Appalachian State's volleyball team lost 3-1 to Western Carolina Thursday at the Ramsey Center.

Western Carolina claimed a 25-23, 28-26, 16-25, 25-17. The Mountaineers got 16 kills from Lauren Gray and 12 kills from Jess Keller. App State setter Paige Brown dished out 50 assists.

Meghan Mahoney had 36 digs defensively.

App State hosts Davidson at 7 p.m. tonight.



JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. -- Appalachian State beat East Tennessee State 2-1 in overtime Thursday night.

Stanley Broaden scored with 31 seconds left in the second overtime to provide the Mountaineers (2-1-5) with the game-winning goal. Stephen Chapman provided the assist to Broaden, who scored his fourth goal of the season. It was also Broaden's first game-winning goal of his college career.

After a scoreless first half, App State took a 1-0 lead on a Broaden goal in the 71st minute. Trey Hemphill got the assist on the play.

East Tennessee State (2-3-2) tied the game with just 41 seconds left in regulation on a goal on a corner kick by Nate Hodges.

Appalachian State outshot East Tennessee State 18-5. Physical play resulted in 15 fouls on the Mountaineers and 11 called on ETSU.

App State hosts Furman in the Mountaineers' Southern Conference opener at noon on Sunday.



GREENSBORO -- Appalachian State settled for a 1-1 tie with UNC Greensboro in a Southern Conference play Thursday night.

UNC Greensboro (4-4-1, 0-0-1 SoCon) scored first on a goal from Chesney White. Zoe Fishman got the assist.

Appalachian State tied the game in the 75th minute when Jane Cline scored her first goal of the season. She gained control of the ball in the 18-yard box and found the left corner of the Spartans goal to tie the game.

App State goalkeeper Megan Roberson had three saves. UNCG outshot the Mountaineers 16-14.

App State hosts Elon at 3 p.m. Sunday.
