App State has two top players for the week
by Staff Reports
Appalachian State had two of the top four performers during Southern Conference games Saturday.
App State linebacker John Law was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week, while Marcus Cox was named the Freshman of the Week by the league Monday.
Law had a game-high 15 tackles in the Mountaineers' 31-21 victory over Elon at Rhodes Stadium. He also intercepted two passes, including one in the first quarter and another in the fourth that stopped a final Elon drive.
Law added a fumble recovery at the Mountaineers' 6-yard line in second quarter that the Mountaineers converted into a 94-yard drive and a touchdown to give them a 24-0 lead.
Cox, starting in his first game in his college career, gained 159 rushing yards on 26 carries and a touchdown. Cox also caught five passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns, including a 73-yarder.
His 3-yard touchdown run with 1:27 left in the game capped a 75-yard drive that saw Cox gain all 76 yards on the ground. The touchdown gave the Mountaineers a 31-21 lead that the Phoenix would not threaten.
Elon punter David Petroni was the Special Teams Player of the Week after averaging 43.5 yards on six points. He placed five of his six punts inside the 20 yard line, and had a long of 50 yards on one of his punts.
