Alexander Central girls' trip Pioneers

TAYLORSVILLE -- Watauga's girls' basketball team struggled with Alexander Central's size in a 54-43 loss to the Cougars Wednesday night.

Alexander Central forward Madi Suddreth scored 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds. Marie Ritchie, another Alexander Central starting forward, added 11 points, while guard Kelsie Rhyne scored 12.

Watauga's Savanna Wood scored 17 points on the strength on four 3-point baskets. Wood, who played the entire 32 minutes, was 4-of-10 from the 3-point arc, and was 6-of-16 overall.

Watauga also got 13 points from Clare Harris, but did not have another player score more than Ryan Loflin's seven points. Watauga coach Klay Anderson

"Our Achilles is finding a consistent second scorer and third scorer every night," Anderson said. "Alexander had three girls who scored in double figures and we had two. When we find that, we'll be OK."

Alexander Central used a fast start to build a 10-3 lead by the end of the first quarter. The Cougars extended that lead to 14-3 before Wood made a pair of 3-point baskets to pull Watauga to 14-9. The Pioneers eventually closed to 17-13, but fell behind 24-17 by halftime.

Alexander Central pulled away in the third quarter. Leading 26-21, the Cougars closed out the quarter with a 12-4 run and led 40-26 going into the fourth quarter.

Wood and Harris kept the Pioneers close by making seven 3-point shots between them. Alexander Central was 0-of-6 from 3-point range, but shot 46.5 percent from the field.

"We need that from her," Anderson said of Harris' shooting. "It might have been the most important 13 points of the season for us with Clare. Now we're going to go home and we're going to have a good practice and we're going to come out Friday ready to go."

Watauga hosts Ashe County on Friday night at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
