CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Appalachian State women’s tennis added another win to its record after outlasting University of North Carolina-Charlotte in a close 4-3 final on Monday afternoon at Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.

The Mountaineers (6-1) captured the doubles point after defeating the 49ers (6-2) in two sets. Charlotte’s Anna Ekelund and Lisa Grosselius took the first set of the afternoon with an 8-6 final against Mountaineer pair Ellie Linsell and Mackenzie LaSure. Appalachian responded as Jennifer Ansari and Clare Cox beat out Natsuko Takayanagi and Alexandra Zinn in No. 2 doubles (8-4), along with Brianna Armellino and Gabriela Celi who outplayed Tyler Baker and Jessica Pérez (8-3) to post the first point of the afternoon (1-0).

Moving into singles action, Linsell found victory in the No. 1 position once again as she defeated Zinn (7-6, 6-2). The Mountaineers were challenged in the middle, as Charlotte’s Takayanagi defeated Cox in No. 2 flight (6-2, 7-5), and Ansari fell to Grosselius at the No. 3 position (6-7, 6-3, 10-4).
Newcomer Armellino edged Appalachian by one (3-2) with her victory against Baker in No. 4 flight (6-3, 6-4). Ekelund would keep hope alive for the 49ers after posting a win at the No. 5 spot over Jessica Thaggard (6-1, 6-2), but Celi sealed the Appalachian victory when she posted a win against Iveta Guneva in No. 6 flight (6-3, 6-4).

Looking ahead, the Mountaineers return to action when they host East Tennessee State University on Feb. 23 at 2 p.m.
