ASU's Nunn named SoCon's top pitcher

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Samford third baseman Tommy Corbin has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week and Appalachian State right-hander Jamie Nunn has been named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week for all games Feb. 15-17. The league office made the selections.
Nunn, a sophomore, squared off with All-American Carlos Rodon of No. 8 N.C. State on opening day and led the Mountaineers to a 6-3 road win. Nunn retired the first nine batters he faced as Appalachian State jumped out to a 5-0 lead.
The Winston-Salem native out-dueled the All-American, limiting the Wolfpack to just three hits in six-plus innings of work. He struck out five, walked two and allowed one earned run.
Appalachian State (1-0 hosted Canisius on Monday.
Other top pitchers included: Matt Pegler (College of Charleston), Austin Pritcher (The Citadel), Clark Beeker (Davidson), Sam Howard (Georgia Southern), Dylan Hathcock (UNCG), Alex Milazzo (Samford), Jeremy Null (Western Carolina) and Brandon Yarusi (Wofford).
Corbin got his season off to fine fashion over the weekend, hitting .667 with a league-best 10 hits as the Bulldogs won their four-game series against Youngstown State, 3-1.
The senior from College Park, Ga., turned in a quartet of multi-hit games, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored in Friday’s 5-3 win in game one of a doubleheader. In game two, Corbin went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI as the Bulldogs completed the sweep 17-3.
The following day, Corbin was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs driven in as Samford cruised to a 13-0 win. He wrapped up his weekend with a 2-for-4 performance Sunday, but the Penguins avoided the four-game sweep with a 6-4 win.
Other top hitters included: Jaylin Davis (Appalachian State), Brandon Murray (College of Charleston), Joe Jackson (The Citadel), Lee Miller (Davidson), Alex Swim (Elon), Paul Nitto (Furman), Ben Morgan (Georgia Southern), Christian Wolfe (UNCG), Aaron Attaway (Western Carolina) and Erick Brenk (Wofford).
Samford (3-1) returns to action when it hosts Alabama A&M at 6 p.m. Central time on Tuesday.
