ASU women's basketball team dumps ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — Appalachian State shook off 15 days of rust to beat East Tennessee State 85-57 Tuesday night at the Memorial Center.

The Mountaineers (7-1), who have not played a game since Dec. 3, won their sixth straight game. The Mountaineers got 16 points and 14 rebounds from Courtney Freeman, and 24 points from Maryah Sydnor.

Appalachian State took a 24-11 lead in the first half, but saw that advantage shrink to led 40-36 by halftime. The Mountaineers outscored the Buccaneers (2-4) 45-21 in the second half.

The Mountaineers also got 16 points from Katie Mallow, and 13 points and eight assists from Anna Freeman. Tiana Burley came off the bench to score 19 points and 13 rebounds.

Burley gave the Buccaneers a 50-49 lead in the second before the Mountaineers ran away with the victory. Appalachian State scored over 70 points for the fifth time this season.

The Mountaineers shot 46.3 percent from the field, while limiting the Bucs to 34.9 percent overall. East Tennessee State made just 7-of-31 shots from the field (22.6 percent) in the second half.

East Tennessee State also missed all 14 of its 3-point attempts. ASU was 5-of-15 from beyond the 3-point arc.

Appalachian State plays at West Virginia on Dec. 28.
