ASU women rip UNC Greensboro

GREENSBORO — Appalachian State cruised to a 77-46 victory over UNC Greensboro Wednesday night in a Southern Conference showdown at Fleming Gym.

The Mountaineers (19-7, 13-5 SoCon) took a 38-22 halftime lead and never looked back. After UNCG’s Jessica Collins scored a 3-pointer for the first basket of the second half, Appalachian State went on a 19-2 run to take a 57-27 lead that buried the Spartans for good. Appalachian State’s offense shot 51.5 percent from the field with help from 27 assists on 34 made baskets.

Maryah Sydnor led the Mountaineers with 18 points. Anna Freeman added 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, while Courtney Freeman scored 13 points.

Raven Gary dished out eight assists and scored nine points.

UNCG (6-12, 3-15) shot just 28 percent from the field. Breonna Patterson led the Spartans with 14 points. UNCG had just eight assists and turned the ball over 26 times.

Appalachian State turns its attention to Chattanooga, which visits the Holmes Center at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Chattanooga beat the Mountaineers 59-55 Jan. 26.

Chattanooga scored the final six points to win the game after ASU held a 55-53 lead. ASU shot 35.2 percent in the game.

ASU follows with a 6 p.m. showdown Monday at home against Samford. The Mountaineers lost 66-64 to the Bulldogs two days after losing to Chattanooga.
