ASU women dump Campbell

GREENVILLE – Raven Gary scored a career high 17 points to lead Appalachian State’s women’s basketball team to a 69-54 victory over Campbell Saturday night at the two-day East Carolina Pirate Thanksgiving Invitational Minges Coliseum.
The Mountaineers (3-1), who grabbed their first road win of the 2012-13 season, also got 17 points from Anna Freeman, who also grabbed 12 rebounds. Maryah Sydnor added 13 points and four steals.
The Mountaineers trailed 49-48 until they rolled to a 69-54 lead with 1:59 left in the game. Appalachian State, which shot just 38.7 percent from the field in the first half, shot 48.3 percent in the second.
Even with the cold shooting, the Mountaineers led 32-26 at halftime, mostly by holding Campbell to 27.3 percent shooting from the field. Tonisha Baker scored 13 points for Campbell.
Appalachian State plays Norfolk State in the second day of the invitational at 2 p.m. Sunday.
