ASU women down College of Charleston

by Staff Reports

ASHEVILLE — Appalachian State’s women’s basketball team overcame 25 turnovers to beat College of Charleston 74-60 in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament at Kimmel Arena.
Anna Freeman scored 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the fourth-seeded Mountaineers, who face top-seeded Chattanooga today at noon. ASU was swept by Chattanooga in the regular season, including a 69-45 loss in Boone on March 2.
“You’re always ready for No. 1, no matter who they are,” ASU coach Darcie Vincent said. “But the fact that it is Chattanooga, it’s going to be a big game.”
Appalachian State overcame its turnover problem Saturday by shooting 57 percent from the field in the second half. The Mountaineers’ defense held College of Charleston to just 28 percent shooting in the second half and in the game.
Appalachian State also outrebounded the Cougars 46-36 and made 23-of-26 from the foul line. College of Charleston made just 11-of-16 from the free throw line.
The Mountaineers had four players score in double figures. Maryah Sydnor scored 17 points, while Raven Gary scored 14. Courtney Freeman scored 11.

College of Charleston got 12 points from Alyssa Frye and 11 points from Latisha Harris. Jill Brown scored just six points on 3-of-10 shooting, but also dished out eight assists.
