ASU volleyball team sweeps Western Carolina

Appalachian State's volleyball team dominated its match against Western Carolina on Sunday evening by winning 25-22, 25-17 and 25-23.

The Catamounts took an early 2-0 lead in the first set before the Mountaineers could tie the set at eight. Appalachian would pull ahead for the rest of the set, winning 25-22.

The second set began with the Mountaineers taking a quick 9-2 lead. Despite the Catamounts pulling within three points to make the score 15-12, App State would find a comfortable win, taking the second set 25-17.

The third set would be a competitive one for both teams as the score was tied five different times. With the score tied at eight, Appalachian would pull ahead for good and take the third 25-23, winning the match 3-0.

Emily Corrigan had another productive match for the Mountaineers, recording 16 kills on the night. Lauren Gray also produced offensively, ending the match with 11 kills.

Paige Brown dished a match high 43 assists, while Meghan Mahoney notched a match high 21 digs on the night.

The Mountaineers hit a dominating .314, while holding the Catamounts to a .235 attack percentage.

Appalachian will return to action on Nov. 1 when they travel to play SoCon opponent Elon.

App State 3, Davidson 2

DAVIDSON -- Appalachian State pulled off a win in a five-set thriller against Davidson on Saturday, featuring set scores of 21-25, 25-24, 23-25, 25-14 and 15-6.

The Mountaineers fell behind quickly in the first set, with the Wildcats taking a 9-5 lead. Despite App State scoring five straight points to close the score to 22-21, Davidson maintained the lead, winning the set 25-21.

Appalachian came out strong in the second set, taking a 8-4 lead. The Mountaineers would not give up the lead for the rest of the set, dominating the second with a final score of 25-14.

The third set would prove to be a battle for both teams, featuring six tied scores. The Mountaineers were able to jump ahead with a score of 3-0, but the Wildcats would come back to tie the score at seven.

Davidson found a way to pull ahead, making the score 20-16, but Appalachian would not give up, tying the score at 23. The comeback would not be enough as the Wildcats took the third set, 25-23.

The Mountaineers would begin the fourth set in dominating fashion, pulling ahead 10-4. The Mountaineers continued to find points, taking the set easily with a score of 25-14 to tie up the match 2-2.

The fifth set began with a tied score of 3-3 before the Mountaineers would take over. After scoring four straight points to pull ahead 13-5, App State would take the set 15-6, winning the match 3-2.

The Mountaineers found a stellar offensive performance from Emily Corrigan, recording a match high 26 kills on the night. Freshman Kat Ferrell followed, finishing with a career high of 16 kills.

Meghan Mahoney notched the second-most digs of her career with 32 on the match. Paige Brown recorded a match high of 54 assists and added 17 digs.

Megan Chamberlin and Tindall Sewell led the Wildcats offensively, recording 12 kills each. Mikayla Derochie added 45 assits for Davidson.

The Mountaineers hit an impressive .325 percentage, and held the Wilcats to hitting just .160. Dalton Tolliver added six blocks to Appalachian's team total of 10, while Davidson had seven.
