ASU volleyball team sweeps Western Carolina

Appalachian State’s volleyball team dominated Southern Conference rival Western Carolina on Thursday en route to a 3-0 sweep at the Holmes Center.
The Mountaineers (7-20, 3-10 SoCon) trailed just three times during the match as it downed the Catamounts (8-20, 4-9) by scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-18.
After trailing by a 9-5 score in the first set, Appalachian State reeled off eight-straight points to take a 13-5 lead and cruised to a first set victory.
The Apps trailed just once in the second set, 4-3, before dominating the rest of the way to earn a 25-18 second-set win.
In the third set, which was the most competitive of the match, the Apps stormed out to a 17-8 lead, but the Catamounts were able to battle back to pull within four points (22-18) before the Mountaineers closed out the set and the match with a 3-0 run.
Dalton Tolliver led the Mountaineers with 15 kills, while Jacqui Spurgeon added 11. Courtney Rhein had 15 digs, which put her 16 shy of the all-time ASU record.
ASU setter Lauren Brown dished out 24 assists.
Jordan Timmerman paced the Catamounts were with 11 kills, while Morgan Cochran notched 15 digs. Tina Nazario finished with 26 assists.
The Mountaineers hit .291 on the attack while, holding Western Carolina to a .147 attack percentage. WCU did finish with an 8-3 edge in blocks.
Appalachian State returns to action Saturday when they travel to Davidson for a 2 p.m. match against the Wildcats.
