LEXINGTON, Ky. — Appalachian State's volleyball team was among 102 NCAA Division I volleyball squads to earn a spot on the American Volleyball Coaches Association list of Team Academic Award winners on Friday.
The Mountaineers are one of just two Southern Conference teams to be named to the AVCA's list for the 2011-12 campaign, joining Georgia Southern as the two representatives from the SoCon.
Appalachian's honor marks its third-straight appearance on the Team Academic Award list and its fourth overall during the tenure of head coach Matt Ginipro. The Mountaineers have earned the award eight times since its inception during the 1992-93 academic year.
In order to be named to the list, teams must compile a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 for the academic year.
A total of 533 teams were honored this year as the awards list included squads from all three NCAA woman's divisions, NCAA men's volleyball, NAIA schools, two-year colleges, NCCAA institutions and high schools.
This year's total of 533 squads surpasses the previous record 481 set during the 2010-11 season and the 102 Division I squads on the list set a new record for NCAA Division I institutions.
