ASU softball team sweeps Elon

Appalachian State's softball team improved its home record to 9-0 and stayed atop the Southern Conference standings by finishing off a series sweep of Elon on Sunday at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.
The Mountaineers claimed a 7-1 victory Sunday. It came on the heels of a doubleheader victory over the Phoenix Saturday when the Mountaineers won the first game 7-3 and the second 8-5.
Appalachian State (18-13, 12-3 SoCon) won four straight before falling to North Carolina and South Carolina last week. The Mountaineers host Winthrop in a doubleheader Tuesday starting at 4 p.m.
The Phoenix fell to 12-24 overall, 2-10 in the SoCon.
Appalachian State stayed in first place in the Southern Conference. The Mountaineers scored first for the third time in the three-game series when Ellie Manriquez drove in two runs with a second-inning single.
Manriquez singled to the right field wall, knocking in two RBI in the bottom of the second inning. The Mountaineers broke the game open in the third inning with a five-run rally that put them in front 7-0.
Appalachian State rapped out four hits and capitalized on two Elon errors. Allie Cashion drove in a run with a double, her 12th of the season.
Ashley Seering followed with a three-run home run, her fifth home run of the season, to put the Mountaineers in front 6-0. Lindsay Loudermilk added an RBI single to close out Appalachian State's rally.
