ASU releases men's basketball schedule
by Staff Reports
Highlighted
by 12 home games and contests against four NCAA Tournament participants,
Appalachian State's men's basketball program released its 2010-11 schedule
Wednesday.
Following
a Nov. 4 exhibition against Lees-McRae, the Mountaineers open the season at
Tulsa on Nov. 12, marking the third time in four seasons the Mountaineers will
open the year away from the Holmes Center.
Appalachian
returns home briefly to host Montreat in the home opener on Nov. 16. Following
that game, the squad takes its longest road trip of the season to play six
games spanning more than three weeks.
The
tough stretch of the non-conference schedule begins at NIT participant
Mississippi State (Nov. 19) before a Nov. 23 rematch with last year's
BracketBuster opponent, Tennessee Tech. While in middle Tennessee, the
Mountaineers will challenge Vanderbilt (Nov. 27) as a final tune-up for
conference play.
The
Mountaineers open their SoCon North title defense at Chattanooga on Dec. 2 and
Samford (Dec. 4) in the only league play before the new year begins. The road
swing closes with a game at Big East powerhouse Georgetown on Dec. 12.
After
a break for final exams, the Mountaineers host Northeast Conference champion
Robert Morris on Dec. 18. ASU then leaves the country for the Cancun Governor's
Cup on Dec. 22-24. The Mountaineers will play three games in a three-day
stretch, beginning with 2010 CBI participant Colorado State in the opening game
of the tournament.
Upon
returning from the holiday trip, the Mountaineers host Milligan on Dec. 30
before diving into SoCon play and the new year. League play begins in earnest
on Jan. 5, as Appalachian State visits Davidson.
The
squad hosts its first SoCon home games of the season when Georgia Southern
(Jan. 8) and UNC Greensboro (Jan. 13) visit the High Country.
Head
coach Jason Capel's squad then travels to Western Carolina on Jan. 15 before
hosting Elon in the season's lone Monday contest two days later.
From
there, the Mountaineers' next three games mirror the team's road to the 2010
SoCon title game. ASU travels to The Citadel (Jan. 20) and College of
Charleston (Jan. 22) before returning home to host Wofford on Jan. 27 in a
league championship rematch.
ASU
then plays its final three road conference games at Furman (Jan. 29), UNC
Greensboro (Feb. 3) and Elon (Feb. 5) before hosting a trio of division rivals.
Samford
heads to Boone on Feb. 10, followed by Chattanooga on Feb. 12 and Western
Carolina on Feb. 17. The Catamounts have not won a game at the Holmes Center
since 2003-04.
For
a fifth-straight year, the Mountaineers are competing in the ESPNU
BracketBusters event. ASU will travel for the Feb. 19 game after the pairings
are announced earlier in the month.
The
regular season wraps up at home with visits from College of Charleston (Feb.
24) and The Citadel (Feb. 26) before Appalachian heads to Chattanooga for the
Southern Conference Championship on March 4-7 at McKenzie Arena.
