ASU places 21 on SoCon academic list

by Staff Reports

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Appalachian State placed 21 of its student-athletes on the Southern Conference Academic all-Conference team.

The league office made the announcement Tuesday.

After 61 Mountaineers made the SoCon's academic all-conference fall and winter teams, Appalachian caps off its 2012-13 campaign with 82 honorees in total.

A total of 321 student-athletes represented by all 12 SoCon institutions were named to the list, surpassing last year's spring total by 11. Honorees included student-athletes from baseball, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf and men's and women's outdoor track and field.

Each of the 12 league schools placed at least 18 student-athletes on the team, with Western Carolina leading the way with 35. Wofford was right behind the Catamounts with 34, while Furman had 33 honored. Elon had 31 and Davidson and Samford had 30 each.

The league's 12 women's outdoor track and field teams provided the most academic all-conference members with 88, followed by men's outdoor track and field and baseball with 45 each.

Thirteen student-athletes boast perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point averages, including Appalachian softball outfielder Kristen Terry and women's outdoor track and field competitor Debra Domermuth.

To be eligible, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative GPA entering the spring season and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions during the recently concluded spring campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least 24 credit hours in the previous two semesters.
