ASU men blast Furman in quarterfinals

by Jamie Shell

ASHEVILLE — Appalachian State didn’t mind rolling up its collective sleeves and getting its hands dirty on defense in its quarterfinal matchup against the Furman Paladins,
The Mountaineers forced 18 Furman turnovers and converting them into 33 points en route to a 74-60 win to advance to Sunday’s semifinal round of the Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament at U.S. Cellular Center.
“I thought we came out and set the tone defensively,” ASU coach Jason Capel said. “We were very unselfish, and defensively we came out and took them out of what they wanted to do. We turned their turnovers into easy baskets ourselves.”
That isn’t to say the win came without struggle for the Mountaineers. ASU led by 14 points at halftime, only to see Furman use a 9-0 scoring run to begin the second half to cut the deficit to 38-33. ASU responded with its own 7-0 scoring spurt to rebuild its margin to double figures.
“It’s a good win, but we didn’t come up here just to win one game,” Capel said. “We came here to survive one game at a time. We have a great opportunity against Davidson.”
ASU was paced by Nathan Healy and Jay Canty, who scored 13 points each. Jamaal Trice pitched in with 12 points off the Mountaineers’ bench. Colin Reddick led Furman with 15 points.
Healy summed up his team’s attitude about facing top-seeded Davidson in today’s first semifinal matchup, which begins at 6 p.m. The Wildcats defeated ASU by an average of 29 points in the two regular-season meetings.
“From the beginning, to get where we wanted to be at the end of the year, we knew we have to beat Davidson,” Healy said. “If you can’t get excited, if you can’t get amped up about tomorrow’s game and not worry about the past, then you don’t deserve to win.”
