ASU gets ready for Fan Fest
by Staff Reports
Appalachian State practiced for two hours in helmets and shoulder pads on Friday afternoon. The workout included limited contact and no tackling and was dedicated for the most part to preparing for Saturday's scrimmage, which is expected to be the final intrasquad duel before the Mountaineers open the season at Montana on Aug. 31.
Appalachian's first and second teams will likely see the majority of the action on Saturday evening as the Mountaineer coaching staff looks to begin finalizing the depth chart and travel roster for the opener at Montana. The scrimmage begins at 7 p.m., which could prove to be beneficial for the Mountaineers early in the season, as their first three games (at Montana, the Sept. 7 home opener versus N.C. A&T and Sept. 21 at Elon) will all be played under the lights.
Gates open at 5 p.m. for Saturday's annual Fan Fest, which is expected to draw between 5,000-10,000 visitors to The Rock. Appalachian State coaches and student-athletes will be on the field from 5-6:30 p.m., signing autographs and posing for pictures with fans while families can toss the football on the Kidd Brewer Stadium turf and kids can take advantage of inflatable rides set up around the field.
The much-anticipated intrasquad scrimmage kicks off at 7 p.m., followed immediately by what promises to be a dazzling fireworks display to close the evening.
Admission to Fan Fest is free.
APP STATE IN TOP 15 FOR TAILGATING
Appalachian State University has been named one of the Top 15 universities in the South for college-football tailgating by Southern Living magazine, the popular publication announced on Friday.
Appalachian State is one of only two schools from a non-"Power 5" conference to earn the recognition and the only institution from the state of North Carolina among the 15 honorees. The 14 other schools on the list include Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Marshall, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. All 15 institutions are featured in the September issue of Southern Living, which hits newsstands on Friday, August 23.
Southern Living chose the 15 universities based on the following criteria: most spirited, traditionalists (schools renowned for gameday rituals), powerhouses (Southern schools with a history of winning on and off the field) and style-setters.
The 15 schools are now finalists for the title of "The South's Best Tailgate." Fans can vote for Appalachian State at southernliving.com/tailgate or via smartphone with the Digimarc Discover app. A link to vote for Appalachian State can also be found at appstatesports.com/promos. Fans that vote will be entered for a chance to win $2,500.
