ASU finishes ranked eighth in coaches poll

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State finished eighth in the final FCS Coaches Poll, which was released Monday.
The Mountaineers finished with an 8-4 record in 2012. They grabbed a share of the Southern Conference championship, but lost 38-37 in overtime to Illinois State in the second round of the playoffs.
Illinois State (9-4) jumped into the Top 10 at No. 9.
North Dakota State finished the 2012 season with its fourth-consecutive No. 1 ranking in this week’s FCS Coaches Poll after a 39-13 victory in Saturday’s national championship game. The Bison finished the season at 14-1 and received 26 first-place votes (650 total points). This is the eleventh time this season NDSU has been ranked No.1 in the coaches poll.
Sam Houston State moved up three spots to No. 2 after advancing to the FCS final. The Bearkats finished the season at 11-4 and received a total of 618 points in the final voting. Georgia Southern moved up four spots to No. 3 after falling to the Bison in the semifinals.
Eastern Washington also advanced to the semifinals and finished the season with an 11-3 record and maintained its No. 4 ranking. Montana State concluded the 2012 season in the quarterfinals with an 11-2 record and rounds out the top five.
Old Dominion (11-2) fell three spots to No. 6, while Wofford (9-4) rose two spots to No. 7. Central Arkansas (9-3) finished ranked No. 10.
Three teams made their top-25 debut in the final poll: Wagner (9-4) at No. 22, Coastal Carolina (8-5) at No. 24, and Eastern Illinois (7-5) at No. 25.
Ten conferences are represented in the poll. The Colonial Athletic Association has the most teams in the top 25 with six. The Big Sky is represented by four teams, while the Southern Conference and Missouri Valley each have three teams in this week’s poll.
The Southland Conference, Big South and Ohio Valley are represented by two teams each, and the Mid-Eastern Athletic, Patriot League, and Northeast Conference have one team apiece in the top 25.
The FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference.

The Mountaineers, who finished 8-4 overall and grabbed a share of the Southern Conference championship, lost to Illinois State 38-37 in overtime in the second round of the playoffs. Illinois State was ranked eighth by The Sports Network.
North Dakota State (14-1) was the unanimous choice to be the No. 1 team, followed by Sam Houston State. North Dakota State cruised to a 39-13 victory over Sam Houston State.
Georgia Southern was third, followed by Eastern Washington and Montana State.
Old Dominion was sixth, followed by Wofford, Illinois State, Appalachian State and Central Arkansas.
No other Southern Conference teams were in the final poll.
