ASU duo tosses no-hitter

VALDESE — Watauga’s softball team beat Draughn 6-0 in the Pioneers’ season opener Wednesday.

Kim Robinson tossed a no-hitter in the six innings she pitched. Robinson, who signed a letter of intent to play with Lenoir-Rhyne before the season started, struck out 12 batters and walked just four.

Michala McCune did not allow a hit in the seventh inning to complete Watauga’s no-hit effort.

Robinson also went 3-for-4 from the plate with a double, and RBI and a run scored. The Pioneers rapped out 15 hits against the Wildcats.

Taylor Drummonds and Elizabeth Dollar each went 3-for-4 from the plate. Drummonds drove in a run and scored another, while Dollar also scored a run.

Hope LaPoint went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Savannah Drummonds went 2-for-4 and scored a run. Riley Pudney, who signed with Emory & Henry before the season, added an RBI triple and scored a run. Rachel Cox also added a hit for the Pioneers.

Watauga’s junior varsity team beat Draughn 4-3 after Pioneers pitcher Kristen Gill limited the Wildcats to just thee hits in five innings pitched.

Gill allowed three hits and walked two. She also struck out six.

Rachel Hawkins got two hits and scored a run for Watauga. Gracy Plyler, Lindy Norris both went 1-for-3 and each scored a run. Sydney Jones doubled and Gill scored a run for Watauga.

Watauga’s varsity will play at Patton on Friday. The Pioneers open their Northwestern Conference season Tuesday at Fred T. Foard.
