ASU blows big lead, falls to Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE — Appalachian State took a 10-point halftime lead, but could not hold on and lost to Western Carolina 70-64 Saturday at the Ramsey Center.

The Mountaineers (1-7, 0-1 SoCon) lost their seventh straight game. Appalachian Sate got 22 points from Jay Canty and 15 points from Nate Healy, but the Mountaineers could not hang on to a 36-26 halftime lead.

Appalachian State trailed 24-20, but scored the next 16 points in the final 5:19 of the first half to take its halftime lead. The Mountaineers scored the first two points in the second half on a Michael Obacha layup to go in front 38-26.

That lead stretched to 43-30 on a Jamaal Trice jumper, but the Catamounts started to slow chip away at the Mountaineers’ advantage. A Tawaski King jump shot tied the game at 53-53 with 6:28 left, but the Catamounts did not take the lead for good until a Tom Tankelewicz 3-point shot put them in front 61-60.

Western Carolina closed out the game with a 9-4 run, including a huge 3-pointer from Tankelewicz, which put the Catamounts in front 69-64 with 28 seconds left.

Tankelewicz led all Catamounts in scoring with 19 points. King scored 14 points and Trey Sumler scored 13.

Appalachian State plays at UMKC on Dec. 16.
